Abstract

Traditional mud-brick (adobe) architecture constitutes a significant proportion of the residential building stock across rural communities in Enugu State, southeastern Nigeria. These structures, though culturally vital and thermally efficient, remain acutely vulnerable to seismic events, seasonal flooding, and severe erosion. This study proposes and evaluates a community-driven education model (CDEM) that integrates participatory learning, indigenous technical knowledge (ITK), and vocational skill development to facilitate the retrofitting of traditional mud-brick structures with modern seismic and erosion-resistant techniques. Employing a mixed-methods design including structured interviews (n = 120), focus group discussions (n = 8 groups), and field observation across six rural communities in Enugu State, the study assessed baseline vulnerability, community awareness levels, and the effectiveness of training interventions delivered through local craft associations, community development committees, and faith-based organisations. Findings reveal that a structured six-module CDEM significantly improved participants’ technical knowledge scores by 67.4%, enhanced adoption rates of retrofitting practices by 53.8%, and fostered community ownership of maintenance protocols. Key retrofitting techniques validated included bamboo-reinforced ring beams, lime-stabilised surface treatments, improved roof anchoring systems, and strategic drainage channelling. The study concludes that education-anchored community engagement, when co-designed with local stakeholders and grounded in contextual realities, constitutes an effective and scalable pathway for improving the resilience of mud-brick settlements in Enugu and analogous rural contexts across sub-Saharan Africa.
